St John’s Choir
St John’s Choir is a faithful group of singers who provide regular support for the congregation singing in Morning Services. They give a lead for the hymn singing, and for the sung parts of the Communion service. In addition, they sing a setting of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) and sometimes an anthem at the end of the Communion.
On the first Sunday in each month, they also lead a service of Choral Evensong, following the order of the Book of Common prayer. This involves leading the congregation in singing the hymns and the Psalm; and also preparing a setting of the canticles (the Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) and an anthem.
The choir also sing a special piece on Good Friday - past years have included Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’ and ‘Requiems’ by Fauré and Rutter - and in addition joins with others to sing the weekend services for two cathedrals during the year. All the music is led expertly and with passion by Stephen Hope - Director of Music.
St John’s has a wonderful musical tradition, but needs more singers to continue this into the future. The choir are all good friends and they would really make any new singers welcome. It is not essential to be able to read music - you can learn as you go. It is an excellent opportunity to offer a real gift to the congregation in worship.
